Mt. Diablo Unified Board of Trustees Approves Appointment of Dr. Robert Martinez as Superintendent

(CONCORD, CA - August 14, 2019) - The Mt. Diablo Unified School District Board of Education has announced it has approved the appointment of Dr. Robert A. Martinez as the district’s new Superintendent. Dr. Martinez currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD). His appointment was approved unanimously Friday; he is expected to start his new position August 19, 2019.

“We are so excited to have Dr. Martinez join us to lead our district going forward,” said Joanne Durkee, MDUSD Board President. “Dr. Martinez emerged from the finalist interviews as the ideal candidate for this important leadership role.”

“Thank you for placing your trust in me, a man with humble beginnings, and to allow me to be a part of a district that is always focused on students first,” said Martinez after the unanimous vote for his appointment. “This work is about the heart….it’s about the passion – it’s about being called to service.”

“It’s a very exciting time to be part of Mt. Diablo Unified,” he added.

Dr. Martinez acknowledged the effective leadership of the previous superintendent, Dr. Nellie Meyer, who is now the superintendent for Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District.

“The previous superintendent did great things, the community is doing great things, and no one person can do it better,” said Martinez.  “But together we will grow, together we will lead, and we will lead with resilience so that every part of our community feels a part of what’s going to happen next.”

“When we start doing this work and carry it to the next level, it’s going to be amazing,” he added.

Dr. Martinez has served the students, families, and employees of FSUSD for 32 years. A native of Baldwin Park, California, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of California, Davis, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management from Drexel University.  Previous to serving as an Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Martinez also served as a school psychologist, assistant principal, principal, and director.

He is a member of the board for the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), and a member of the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA).

Dr. Martinez’ annual base salary as Superintendent is $277,000, with at $2,000 stipend for his doctorate, payable monthly, and the Superintendent will receive the same benefits as other management employees in addition to a $300 per month flat reimbursement for automobile mileage and a $200,000 term life insurance policy with the District as beneficiary for $25,000.
