Math
Tier 1
We are implementing the Bridges Math Program this year in order to provide an articulated, comprehensive, rigorous math learning experience to children. The curriculum will focus on developing deep understanding of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges “blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration. It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful.” For further information about Bridges, check out this Bridges link.
Tier 2
Students who need to review concepts/skills or learn more sophisticated material receive support within small groups or via a 1:1 teacher:student format. We also use the adaptive online iReady program to reinforce concepts and skills while the online Reflex program provides math fact automaticity practice. A variety of manipulative materials, such as Jo Boaler-type games, are valuable to reinforce or extend mathematical understanding.
Tier 3
Math Intervention Lab
Thanks to our PFC, Walnut Acres provides math intervention to support targeted students not progressing as expected with Tier 1 and Tier 2 assistance in the classroom. We selected the Colorado Math Screener and other appropriate Math assessments to collect data, analyze math needs and inform Tier 3 math teaching strategies. We have one part-time Math Specialist who provides direct targeted lessons to a maximum of 5 students per group.
